'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' Review

The Mummy returns for its third installment after 7 years. This one is set in China, where Alex O’Connell awakens an ancient Chinese Emperor who is once again hell bent on taking over the world.
The change of setting however is not the only change for this film. Director Rob Cohen takes over the reign as director from Stephen Sommers who also wrote the screenplay for the first two films. Cohen brings a more action orientated feel to this one, not surprisingly following his hits with XXX and the Fast and the Furious. Consequentially the trademark humor of the first two films is sadly missing, save for a couple of scenes. The dialogue is also lacking from the Stephen Sommers screenplays.
Frasier as Rick O’Connell and John Hannah as his brother in law Jonathon return for this one, however Oscar winner Weisz does not return as Evelyn O’Connell. She is replaced by Maria Bello. Bello has a huge gap to fill and she does quite well. Unfortunately however she and Frasier just do not share the same chemistry as he did with Weisz. Aussie actor Luke Ford also does well in his first feature film lead role; however he lacks the charisma of the likes of Frasier.
Jet Li seems wasted in his role as the Dragon Emperor as he has very little dialogue and hardly any fight scenes. Why they would hire one of the best martial arts fighters in the world as the bad guy and then not even use him is beyond me.
The action sequences are thrilling and the special effects are improved. However ultimately it is Brendan Frasier’s trademark charm that is able to hold the movie together. Although it is a little disappointing when compared to the previous two films.

6/10

Watched the other "mummies" but not this one yet, I heard others said it is not as good too but I will watch it when I have time. Hopefully it won't be too disappointing.

well, I did watch the earlier two parts of this series but this part i just ignored. Don't know why ! .. but it was not as appealing as the earlier ones and after the release response i didn't even gave it a second thought.

I had an almost opposite opinion of this movie. I thought it was terrible. It did have some nice action sequences but the dialogue was insufferable and Frazier's acting was painfully bad. Hopefully he finds some better projects in the future. You do have a nice site though.

okay, so it's not entirely opposite. We actually agree on the terrible dialogue and lack of character development, etc. I just don't think Frazier's charm held it together at all. Not the worst movie I've ever seen, but definitely not worth the two hours.

Wow that looks really good, they've definately picked up the action in this later one. You've got a nice blog here, I like your system, of a movie for each blog post, and then a little paragraph explaining it. That's a good strategy and enalbes you to post everyday because you don't have to write as much.

I'm also wondering about the comment you left on my blog. That will start as soon as you want. So if you write the blog post with the list and keep updatiing it as your readers join in, then I'll add your blog to my list. Just let me know when you've posted it.

the third part of the mummy series was not quite as i expected. it was great at first but loads of CGI can definitely kill a movie. the storyline was ok tho.
